I had actually forgotten that this application process started shortly after my daughter was born; we are currently attending University open days

As we said in the meeting today, this isn't about the past. It is a step towards the future!

It isn't actually all that impossible to explain in some ways - just say that the Lancashire people were sure that they were right about Manchester not being a county.Andrew Wainwright wrote: ↑Sat Oct 08, 2022 10:07 pmPeace in our time.MartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Sat Oct 08, 2022 10:02 pmI'm absolutely astonished, albiet in a good way!
Always nice when the world gets more rational and cooperative
Might have four strong teams in the county championship qualifiers this year?!
I tried to explain the background to this saga to my wife this evening. As a rational human being she didn't get it.
She did understand when I said that our son will now get the opportunity to play the MCF every year. An opportunity that 30yrs ago, as a junior player, I did not have (nor did my counterparts in Manchester). I think that says everything.
Anyone who knows anything about chess players will know just how madly stubborn we can be when we think we're right. Often regardless of how impractical/self destructive we're being in the process!
It can even be admirable in its place just....

Either way, I will enjoy taking teams to play both the MCF and Lancashire. That is not just because I live in Holmfirth and it is a short hop away. I like both organisations.

I've played in all of the counties and its all good Often the same players of course.Stephen Westmoreland wrote: ↑Sat Oct 08, 2022 11:37 pmEither way, I will enjoy taking teams to play both the MCF and Lancashire. I've played in all 4, probably even qualified to play for three of them permanently, although there's obviously only one I could imagine doing so!
(I'm not quite sure if Warrington N of the river qualifies as Lancashire, Cheshire, both or neither )

Well, Warrington is in Cheshire so you might expect that to be the answer

We're a border town I guess the technical position may well be both, not that it matters!Mick Norris wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:26 amWell, Warrington is in Cheshire so you might expect that to be the answer
The NW bit I'm in now probably thinks of itself as being in Merseyside as much as anywhere else.

Re: NCCU and the MCF
It was Lancashire before the county changes (the town originally was north of the river, but had expanded), but it decided not to join Merseyside or Greater Manchester; and thus was disconnected from Lancashire entirely, so was amalgamated into CheshireMick Norris wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:26 amWell, Warrington is in Cheshire so you might expect that to be the answer

It is a bit like my village, where the old Yorkshire/Lancashire county border passes through it; in fact I cross that border every time I go to my regular pub; and 3Cs as a chess club has crossed over it multiple times in its history

Fun Might even be different in chess terms, not sure.Alan Walton wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 12:44 pmIt was Lancashire before the county changes (the town originally was north of the river, but had expanded), but it decided not to join Merseyside or Greater Manchester; and thus was disconnected from Lancashire entirely, so was amalgamated into CheshireMick Norris wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:26 amWell, Warrington is in Cheshire so you might expect that to be the answer
Back to more important things - does this mean we get GM in NCCU county chess this season or do we have to wait a year?
It'll be great if we suddenly have four fully viable teams.

Re: NCCU and the MCF
Conversions are happening. From the Yorkshire side we are entering 5 teams (maybe more). Would be great to see a big MCF representation. Along with Lancs and other counties.MartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 2:49 pmFun Might even be different in chess terms, not sure.Alan Walton wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 12:44 pmIt was Lancashire before the county changes (the town originally was north of the river, but had expanded), but it decided not to join Merseyside or Greater Manchester; and thus was disconnected from Lancashire entirely, so was amalgamated into CheshireMick Norris wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:26 amWell, Warrington is in Cheshire so you might expect that to be the answer
