Richard Palliser's performance against GMs in the 2009 British Championships was won three, lost three, which doesn't seem quite good enough to get a GM norm to me.

Performance rating has to be 2600 or above! His performance against GMs wouldn't be relevant.

He has one from the 2002/3 4NCL.

That can't be right, can it?
It certainly isn't. I know of 7 others. Lawrence Cooper posted a list on the ECF web site last year although I can't find it now to provide a link.

4NCL: Andrew Greet secured his first GM norm and Graham Morrison, Alexei Slavin and Peter Sowray made IM norms. (http://www.englishchess.org.uk/?p=3811#more-3811)

Adam,

I think that if you are looking for Graham Morrison appearing as an English IM you will have a considerable wait. Not that I doubt Graham's ability to get his third norm (and hopefully he will do so at the Olympiad) I just doubt that he is English!!!

I make no claims upon his nationality, and in fact it suits us right down to the ground ;-) Get him that title!

The thread was about English players :D . It seemed reasonable to assume that an ECF Director would not wander off subject

All [of your talented] players are potentially English.

Their lists are always hopelessly out of date. By my not perfect but more recent records the following English players have GM norms:

2 Andrew Ledger & Adam Hunt (incl 2010 British)

1 Lorin D'Costa, Richard Pert, Andrew Greet, Andrew Martin, Andrew Kinsman, Charles Cobb, Graeme Buckley, Robert Bellin, Michael Hennigan, Thomas Rendle, Colin Crouch, Dagne Ciuksyte.

Apologies for any omissions. The rating officer will have exact records and copies of norm certificates etc whereas mine are taken from whatever source I can find as a guide which may prove useful to anyone wanting to invite English norm seekers.

Do you have to be an IM before being a GM?

Nope, as a certain Mr. Kramnik has demonstrated...

No. Kasparov became a GM without even having been an adult.

You don't have to be a FM to become an IM, but you do need to be a FA (FIDE Arbiter) to become an IA (International Arbiter). Go figure.

What happens if you get two Gm norms and an Im do you become an IM?
