I think the real reason chess is not on the TV, is the subconscious desire of the people who really run our culture, not to change anything at all, problem is, things have truly changed with human economics.

An acre is the amount of land, a man with a horse and plough can plough in a day, along came tractors, one man with a tractor and plough can achieve well over 30 times that, whilst raising nary a sweat.

Why has our economic theory not progressed beyond Adam Smith?

Why are our affairs run by people like Alan Sugar, who is on record as saying he would rather make money than make love? People like him, do not want a sport that promotes thinking for oneself like chess, people like him only want propaganda propagators on TV, like Eastenders and Coronation St, designed to keep us nice quiet consumers that shop at Tesco's programmed by loyalty points and keep happily funding the insurance betting office racket.

My other half's a Corrie fan. When the episode likely to air, and which characters are involved?
A ill-informed source suggests that Dot Cotton is giving a blindfold clock simul versus the Dingle family with Elsie Tanner as arbiter.

There will be a horrendous explosion (someone leaves the gas on) with much mayhem and gnashing of teeth and many "Cor blimeys" and whippets.

Dot will be taken hostage by Dirty Den and later rescued by Benny and "Miss Diane".

In the final scene "JR" will return to "The Street".
And JR will explain that Bobby really was in a coma for over a year, caused by his opponent forcing him to play the Exchange French.

Peter Turland >Why has our economic theory not progressed beyond Adam Smith?<
Could it be because until recently Adam Smith was a special adviser to Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Sec?
He had to sacrifice himself to give the latter a chance to wriggle out of a tight spot he has gotten into.
If the ECF had managed to associate themselves with the Olympics they may have kept some external funding coming for this year. Bridging finance until enhanced DMS replaces DCMS grant. Hope Adam Smith goes on to better things.

John McKenna >If the ECF had managed to associate themselves with the Olympics they may have kept some external funding coming for this year.<

That was a total non-starter once Tony Banks was sacked.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov understands very well the advantages of chess being recognised by the IOC, which of course it is. But he wasn't able to get it actually into the games. The logistics of so many events is the stumbling block.

I doubt Scotland will succeed with the Commonwealth Games in 2014. We didn't in Manchester.

To get chess regularly on TV, a thousand people have to write in independently requesting it to the same set of stations.

This morning on the RT.com channel there was an interview with Vladimir Kramnik as build up to the world title match opening today in Moscow.

What is the R.T channel?

Mike Creaney >Since the Master Game Series (or before if any existed) how many programmes on chess either on terrestial or sky can anyone remember ? ( excluding films obviously ).

This isn't a precise response to this question. What follows is my catalogue of broadcast TV in my DVD collection. I have none of the David Nixon series that started in about 1972. Nor do I have several of the Master Game Series. Some of the material mixed in was not broadcast in Britain. You can find my complete catalogue on the ECF site. That includes fictional material. When I pasted and copied it stripped out most of th tabulation.

Stewart,

Is your collection for personal use only?

Does the National Chess Library have access? Would you allow them to digitize your collection?

Potentially, this could form a very significant collection.

It's an English Language Russian TV channel. If you've got a digital TV you should be able to get it unless you're in the sticks. The programme I heard is on their web site below and is downloadable:

This one presumably
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29

from which
In the UK and Ireland, the channel is available on the Sky platform's channel 512, including in the Freesat from Sky package. It is also available in the UK 24 hours per day on Digital Terrestrial platform Freeview channel 85 and also on Freesat channel 206.
I suppose it's plausible they will have coverage of Anand v Gelfand.

The NCL in Hastings has most of my material. I recorded it for them. Some commercial material can't be copied. Thy have never advertised this part of their collection. But somebody can ask to access the material. Their reluctance is because such a high proportion is copyright.

The catalogue has been on the ECF website for several years.

Sometimes I have copied material for people on the strict understanding that they wouldn't copy it on. Thus there is a good proportion of it in Israel, Nigeria, South Africa. Sometimes people need a single item. Sometimes people come to my home to view particular items. Of course I cannot charge, so I ask for a donation to Hastings Chess Congress.

To the best of my knowledge my collection is the biggest in English in the world.

I don't know technically how to copy such as the Kramnik interview in a way in which I can add it to my permanent collection. Of course the interviewer was very mediocre, but Kramnik spoke well.

It's available as a download from the Russia Today web site link quoted above, so you can get an MP4 version of the programme and copy it to a CD.

Matthew is back from Weatherfield, with the news that broadcast is likely to be 2 July, and that he can't say more than that

Good news is that a follow up scene is being filmed in a couple of weeks

If it stretches to end June, we hope to get Kasparov in the Rovers Return
