When there was some analysis for bridge in the same terms as chess, the numbers were about half those for chess. This is based on a 20 year old fallible memory. Poker wasn't analysed.
Bill Hartston told m that, at one time, The Master Game was attracting viewing number of 1-5 million. This caused the BBC2 some problems as it was supported as a minority interest as required by its charter - and it became borderline to describing it in this manner.

I have managed to dredge up from my memory the name of the company who researched such information.
TARGET GROUP INDEX http://www.getmemedia.com/tgi.html. You can register free and get a free 24 hour trial. I have just done so.

getmedia.com wasn't what I was looking for.

TGI samples 25,000 adults throughout the year. I remember I used to be able to get the previous year's report FREE.

Pul,
I don't think so. I was looking for a company that could tell mde the profile of people who were interested in chess. e,g, Were they A B C1 C2 D or E?

The brochure is too large to upload here, but you should be able to access it via this link;

I hope they do a better job of making the programmes than they have in producing the brochure. They need to sack their proof reader (if in fact they have used one). Apart from numerous typos, there is also the following howler -
Checkmate Brochure wrote: Games may be won in the following ways:
Check; The King is under attack by an opposing piece.
And why does it include a page about SEIS/EIS investments?

Sky Arts has been showing two "Tales of the Unexpected" a day, recently including "The Best Chess Player in the World" (number 85 on the Wikipedia list of ToU), and first broadcast in 1984. It was actually quite good, (written by Julian Symons, so it should be), although the title of the series sometimes makes the ending more obvious than it would otherwise be.

A lot of these are available on Youtube.

I was the chess advisor on 'The Best Chess Player in the World'. I pointed out an enormous hole, non-chess related, in the story, but nobody seemed interested.
I don't have a copy of that in my collection. Can anybody help? Not that there is much chess in it.

I see Nigel Short is currently playing a tournament in Malta which goes under the banner 'Checkmate TV' - the presenters are Anna Richardson (The Big Breakfast, C4) and GM Simon Williams.

The cross-table, linked at Nigel's Twitter feed, is given on the Chess-Results website. Presumably the tournament is not being shown on any regular, UK accessible TV channel. Anyone have any knowledge?

Saw the new Bond movie SPECTRE last night. Sadly the long awaited Chess scene from the trailer in which we all hoped Kronsteen would be making a comeback, turned out to be nothing more than a nice setting for a man to blow his brains out, not a piece was moved.

The whole movie was a bit slow in general to be honest, a lot of build up for not much of an ending, plus Christoph Waltz’s much hyped performance of the new Blofeld turned out to be nothing more than a watered down version of Landa in Inglorious B@*tards, he came across as a little bit weedy to be quite honest (a scene where he is shown wearing loafers without socks didn’t help ) Bit of a let-down in my humble opinion, nowhere near as good as Casino Royal and Skyfall (we don’t talk about Quantum!).

I thought you had quoted "When you see a good movie, look for a better one!" - Lasker
I thought that someswhat prescient of him, unless it had been Edward Lasker.

With the death of Jeremy James, now seems like an ideal time to break out the Master Game DVDs again. Very cool chap, he was :-)
