Apologies for being wise after the event but I thought boards 14-16 might be a tricky section for the seeded players in round 1 and so it proved, with Yang-Fan and Richard Palliser going down and Adam Hunt drawing. I think their 'swiss gambit' might not be that effective and they look to have tricky pairing in round two. I'll predict that 14-16 will again see some upsets.

Hawkins v Adams tomorrow. Very tasty - let's hope the mechanics can sort out the wiring overnight!

Nice to see that Palliser-Shaw now happens. Yorkshire's 'official number one' against one of the best players in Yorkshire for a long time. I hope Palliser might be demoralised enough that a draw might happen (they've drawn before) but it'll be tough.

I think a lot of people will be predicting a really good game on board 1 tomorrow. I have just got this feeling that they might be disappointed. I predict Jonathan to be a couple of pawns up by move twelve and it to be all over (with Adams winning) by move 25.

Yeah I think Hawkins-Adams will be interesting too- two tough games for Adams straight up. Accelerated pairings do seem to produce challenging encounters right from the off...

Can somebody explain to me how the draw works it looks to me like it is arranged to help out GMs and IMs that lost in round 1.Why are they not playing players on 0 points like themselves

Essentially, it works like this:

Top half players on 1 play each other.
Bottom half players on 1 play top half players on 0.5 or 0.
Bottom half players on 0.5 play top half players on 0.
Bottom half players on 0 play each other.

That is the general idea. Sometimes though they end up on 0/2.

There was a lengthy discussion of the merits of various pairing systems starting here

There were more players on 1 due Black, so somebody had to have a double White. The higher ranked player (points followed by rating) keeps their colour sequence. So Adams gets his Black and Jonathan has a double White.

Thank you for the explanation Matthew.
I disagree with you about the Hawkins Adams game it will def go more than 25 moves Johnathon is playing with a lot of confidance i think its nearly 12 months since he lost a game he had some excellent results in the 4ncl i can not see him beating Adams but a draw is not out of the question

If Short and Adams keep winning, which round will they meet in and what colours? Or does it depends to some extent on the other results as you could end up with someone else with them on maximum points, though that would only delay a clash by one round? Of course, one of them dropping a draw (or worse) before then is likely, but was just wondering.

It depends on other results. They are only likely to play as leaders if there are only two (or possibly three) players on their score but due to the accelerated pairings I expect several of the top clashes to take place this week if the top four don't drop points early on.
