This is absolutely remarkable. I can just imagine some beleaguered aide quietly suggesting to Assad that he might like to meet with Kirsan and Assad breaking down in tears, "So, it really is over then".

The Dalai Lama is probably safe from further harm, Kevin, having been ousted by the Chinese in 1959. I believe he is now looking to retire but the procedure to find a successor is much more long-winded than finding a new Pope.

Perhaps the US should pay for Ilyumzhinov to visit Tehran: "No, Mr Ahmedinejad, I don't think developing nuclear weapons is a good idea. You'd be much better off learning to play chess instead..."

As well as meeting ex-Presidents of the USA, USSR and Poland alongside the Dalai Lama, he also saw fit to meet some American players and organisers and had lots of pictures taken.
