No i did not see i was giving away pawn after those moves i just had a look at it on my pocket set.I thought i was making really good moves in the opening playing like a grandmaster until he said checkmate! Peter said i got the move order wrong!

I just delivered checkmate in 5 moves in an online correspondence game, as black!
I think that must be a record for me, can anybody beat it?
My opponent played the Grob, which is pretty dangerous if you don't know the theory.

I think I might soon need to change my user name from "happy_loser" to something more appropriate!

I was on both sides of Scholar's Mate (or variants thereof) in school games, but the quickest mates I've had in competitive games were 17 moves (won) and 18 (lost - my opponent had missed a mate on move 16, but made no mistake the second time). I did once win a friendly game with 1. b4 e6 2. Bb2 Bxb4 3. Bxg7 1-0.

That is amazing to see in a postal chess game as you would expect less blunders. I wonder if that is the quickest win ever for a postal chess game.

Not least because of that sneaky old "conditionals" trick - a few games have started 1d4, then Black replying "1......g6 2 any White reply Bg7. To which White unsportingly (but devastatingly) replies 2Bh6!!! - then 3Bg7 followed by 4Bh8

Yes Matt but those conditional moves don't usually lead to an actual checkmate.
I think it would be hard to better mate in 5; I couldn't believe it when he played 4.Nh3??

I agree can you ask the postal chess association if it is the quickest win that they know of?

This was the first correspondence game I ever played on the internet.

Peter it wasn't a postal game, it was on the internet with a time limit of 3 days per move - perhaps I used the word "correspondence" wrongly.

Yes Richard's game is also 5 moves and it was a genuine Correspondence game as well!

yes i thought correspondance means postal game any way its still an amazing game as your opponent had plenty of time to look at his move before making it. Maybe he thought like i did that i was winning untill opponent says checkmate!

I once played in a tournament where I came second with 4/5. The one loss was in 9 moves, it wasn't checkmate just a late night cock up against a tough opponent.
