There was just a few seconds about Anand-Carlsen on the 24h rolling news channel on Spanish TV (they gave the score and said the next gamke is tomorrow). I don't know if it's been on the main TV news.

There's also live coverage as well as regular reports on the website of the most popular daily sports paper, MARCA.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

A colleague has just sent me a copy of a cartoon in today's Telegraph (looks like a "Matt"), depicting two people playing chess, and one says, "It’s a woman bishop, it can move any way it wants."

I saw that too, but I have no idea what it is about!

It's a reference to the Church of England voting to allow women to be bishops.

But why would that mean that it didn't have to follow the standard rules? I don't understand.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

I *think* it is really a joke about women, not chess.

Good article. He is right to say that chess has never created the same level of public interest since the Fischer-Spassky match.

Not even Short-Kasparov, played in London, could arouse the same passion among English chess fans.

I am not sure what the reason is - advances in chess computers might be a part of the reason but not all of it.

Just suppose that Micky Adams had qualified to play Magnus Carlsen for the World Championship, would that enthrall the nation in the same way that Fischer-Spassky did? I'm sure that it wouldn't.

The fact is that chess today is seen as boring by non-chess players, whereas Fischer brought excitement to the game. Part of that was undoubtedly due to his flawed personality - you never knew what he would do next, or even if he would play!

He did a great deal to popularise chess though and to improve prizes and playing conditions.

Board strategy?

Do they mean whether to use solid wood or roll-up plastic ones? :D

I once had an opponent whose board strategy was to cover up the h8 square with his pinkie.
