Assuming Tristan got it right (maybe PM me?) has anyone else got this yet? (Belated apologies to Geoff for answering his conundrum and potentially spoiling it for others).

I did, though not immediately. Tristan identifies a possible quibble; there's also another very minor one which I'll keep quiet about for now, for fear of being a spoiler.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Assuming Tristan got it right (maybe PM me?) has anyone else got this yet? Maybe towards the end of the weekend, as then most people will have seen it (Tristan got it right, btw). We should really decamp to a new thread if anyone wants to do more of these (or any sort of chess-themed quiz questions). Might be fun!

An interesting, and quite lengthy, article from Slate.com on Caruana's performance in the Sinquefield Cup at http://www.slate.com/articles/sports/sp ... pened.html. It also includes a link to TWIC. The author seems to have some knowledge of chess, but confesses that after 40 moves the time limits get confusing!

The answer was 'W' for Wilhelm.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:You've kind of given it away. 'K' (for Kasparov).Geoff Chandler wrote: I once set this as poser on another Forum - Which Letter comes next?

How about this sequence?
MVVGABBTMMMVMAMAJE
What is the next (and last) letter in that sequence?
So what were the quibbles Tristan and John had?

Shouldn't one of the B's be an R?Christopher Kreuzer wrote:The answer was 'W' for Wilhelm.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:

Oh. Good point. That was probably one of the quibbles.

The first V could arguably be an A, because Anand is actually his given name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viswanathan_Anand

I remember having dinner with Vishy before he became World Junior Champion and his saying plaintively, 'I wish I could remember which is my family and which my given name.'

Yeah, that was mine, Lewis - well spotted. I don't think Fischer liked having a B for an R, on or off the board.Lewis Martin wrote:Shouldn't one of the B's be an R?

Re: Media comments on chess
Hi John,
I do remember reading that Fischer once delivered a very angry look to some punter
who complained to him he had signed his autograph 'Robert' instead of 'Bobby'.
There again he did not object to his collection of 60 games being titled 'Bobby Fischer'.
If he was born in Scotland he would have been called Rabbie Fischer. 'Rab' for short.
Rabbie Jimmy McFischer. (he was also quite tall so would have picked up the 'Big Yin' tag.)

Channel 4's Countdown programme yesterday featured chess problemist Michael McDowell, who did very well and is on the show again today - at the moment he is leading.
