Good to see that Phil is still going strong?

Presumably that Mr Giles is the same player I encountered back in the 1987/88 campaign in that league.

(which was my last season as a Lancaster player)
Hi Matt.
Yes, Phil's grade has increased to 1946, he is doing well.
He has been playing at the Blackpool Congress the last few years in the Majors, although I felt I was a bit fortunate to beat him there.
Yes, Alan Giles played for our club (Poulton-le-Fylde) in the 1980s and early 1990s and then moved away.
He then joined Morecambe a number of years ago and after Morecambe's demise, joined Bare Village.
Bare Village board 3 is former Preston player Peter Thompson 1801, who had a very tough game against our rapidly improving junior Sara Khan, who I am teaching on a one to one.

Granada new report on Eccles new venue
One of the first dedicated chess venues in the region has officially opened - but has just four months to find funding and secure its future.

After playing in its members' living rooms for five years, Eccles Community Chess Club opened its first venue on Saturday 20 January.

With the new space on Eccles high street, the club plans to make chess more accessible to the town's residents while also offering a place for them to socialise.

But following one of the links from the Wiki entry turns up a couple more of her pastimes: "writing comic verse and French polishing".

Today's Sun has a picture of the actor Woody Harrelson playing inmates at Wormwood Scrubs ('immates' the Sun missed a pun there - they titled it 'Natural Pawn Killer' ) Woody has a minor brush with the law in the 1980's there is also a picture of his mugshot from1982.

His father had a, let's call it, a more colourful background.

Where we learn amongst other things he may have been involved in the Kennedy assassination.

More on the same: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/0 ... bs-prison/

"During the pandemic, it supported more than 70 prisons by sending inmates chess puzzles to complete".
He added that the puzzles were translated into Romanian and Polish because of high demand from the prisoners.

2nd time I tried to read I got paywall, not sure why it let me read first time. Opened link in an 'incognito' tab on phone and it could all be read. I have pm'ed it to Geoff as I think it's too long to paste here. I tried attaching as a .txt file that didn't work.

Harrelson was fined for damaging a UK taxi in the past.

A short paste:

Mr Pein, who holds the title of International Master, was introduced to Harrelson around five years ago by a mutual friend and has been teaching the thespian chess ever since.

“We have a game going 365 days a year,” he told The Telegraph, saying that he would describe Harrelson as a “strong amateur player” who typically plays the game online.

Something occurs to me. One or more of you may have available an illustration relating to History of the Laws of Chess.
That would be very useful. The book is due to be published July 2024.
