I bought a CD the other day. I was intrigued. It is Rugolo plays Kenton. That is Pete Rugolo and Stan Kenton from 1958. Big band jazz of course. The cover has them seated in front of chess pieces with a backdrop of giant black and white squares. The titles of the pieces had nothing to do with chess. They were reworkings of 1940s titles.
I thought perhaps it was the CHESS Label. Again nothing to do with chess, the name of the main company director is Chess. But, no that isn't so.

A minor mystery then. But the music is enjoyable.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, or if this is the wrong place to post, but Better Chess Openings - For Intermediate Levels Of Play has a front cover of the starting position with one unfortunate mistake.
No, the bottom right squares are white but the publisher has managed to put the kings and queens on the wrong squares.

"Chess Moves" is the guest publication on tonight's "Have I got news for you."

When "Chess Moves" quoted someone (Dominic Lawson?) recalling a game against an opponent purring like a cat, who could it possibly be referring too?

Hardly the best kept secret in the chess world. I suspect you know who it is, but are too circumspect to say.

Anyway, it all adds to the great PR that our great game receives and deserves.

The story goes that Simon Williams went 'woof' when Kwiatkowski started his antics and frightened him out of his skin.

Well he does genuinely like cats, to be fair. Might ask him what he thinks of his new found fame this afternoon. I'll report back later, if printable.

Sunday Times 22.11.2015
Dominic Lawson's column page 30 of the main section:
War without a comprehensive strategy is like playing chess without calculation: possible, but pointless.

Page 11 of the News Reviw.
A substantial article on The London Academy for Excellence in Newham. The caption for the photo 'Social mobility is at the heart of the project for London Academy of Excellence, expanding the options for ambitious students ready to make their next move.'
It is no surprise that the photo shows two males playing chess. BUT, the rather indistinct photo, shows an opening where black has a bishop on h6, pawn g5 and pawn c5. I've given up on White's pieces. Black is gesticulating with his right hand; he may be intending to move.

Why, oh why couldn't they have set up a realistic position? I called them males, because the player of the black pieces (ethnically white) had a full beard and moustache, although dressed like a schoolboy.

Yanis Varoufakis
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

"The London Academy for Excellence in Newham"

Excellence in Newham?

I take it back - they got 5 pupils to Oxbridge, according to their website.

Is there any chess connection?

The website is at
http://excellencelondon.ac.uk/

It describes a sixth form college, very much an academic hothouse. Presumably selection by GCSE (O levels) is considered OK. If the pupils get any time of their own, it's also the type of environment historically conducive to generating teams of strong chess players.
