Hi,

Fleming was known was dropping wee 'in jokes' in his books.

Don't look for them all in the films, you have to read the books.

Remember to forget the film (if that makes sense) as the film shares
the title of the book and little else. Moonraker for instance takes
place in south England and nobody goes into space.
(Paul Morphy is mentioned a few times.)

Fleming was so smitten with Ursula Andress when meeting her on location at Dr.No
that, as promised, her referred to her by her real name in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service.'

I've not read Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (though have sang the song along with other O's fans)
there maybe more 'in' jokes in there. That scene where the old men are trying to build a flying
car, if that's in the book I'm bettering Fleming would have had some fun with the Boys from Bletchley.

Not an 'in joke'

The child catcher - once voted one of the most frightening villains to appear in a children's book
never appeared in the book. Fleming would have got a chuckle out of that.

More facts:

McAdams, the unfortunate opponent of Kronsteen in 'From Russia WIth Love is obviously Mickey Adams
and although he is not a Canad....wait a minute.....I've not thought this one through.

aaah Geoff,
Maybe because the pairing says -- " Cechoslovakien Kronsteen-Canada MACADAMS" on the demo board -- the wrong Mac ?? I also see places/ articles/ websites, quoting Mac and Mc, on the same page, whilst some just say Mc.
Would explain why the match score got up to 11.5 v 11.5 anyway. -- LOL - if it was the real McCoy that was playing!

BTW: Tartakower loved Casinos, I would have expected that him and Fleming would have got on fine. Discussing Mausers, or Brownings, (Not a ladys' gun like the PPK), or duelling with the use of the Dagan (short sabre) - general issue to Line Infantry Officers in the Imperial army.
i.e. Fleming learns witty Tartakoverisms, the latest in-jokes ?

A mention of Chessable and David Kramaley (and a video as well) here:

Worth a read and look.

I took Boris Spassky around Gibraltar one year when he came as a spectator to the tournament. Our guide mentioned 2-3 Bond films had scenes shot there.
Boris then commented on the scene in 'From Russia with Love' of his game against Bronstein. "Perhaps they removed the two pawns from the board because they feared that chess games might be copyright."

Harry said to me that Turing was a queen odds chessplayer.

Trump claiming that there are no American Grandmasters at a speech in Ambridge Pennsylvania a couple of days ago (thanks to Olimpiu G. Urcan on Twitter who provided a 15 second clip). I think there are 90 GMs and they just won the Olympiad! https://twitter.com/OlimpiuUrcan/status ... 6097017856

That probably makes it unusually truthful for him ;)

Guardian today:
Italian and Spanish football of that era was analogous to a particularly grim and attritional game of chess
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Thursday's Times bursting with chess. The first good. The second dreadful.

The presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party may have some starling gaps in his knowledge of foreign affairs, but Gerry Johnson makes up for this with his chess skills. He has been known to play 3 games of chess simultaneously blindfold.

Richard Pentreath absconded on 3 October and was convicted in his absence of pediastry. He was first arrested in September 2013. He is a businessman who has written books on chess. I do not know that name and did not recognise his photo. BUT his previous name was Hilary Clifford Thomas. I certainly knew him in the 1980s. He wrote 'Thw Complete Games of Mikhail Tal' in 1980.

I thought the name seemed familiar. He was also behind a short lived magazine in the 1970s.

The first issue was distributed free with an invitation to subscribe. There was a second issue, but no third one. It did publish some in depth material on openings and tournaments.

I subscribed to International Chess and received issues 1 & 2.

When issue three failed to materialise it transpired that owner, Hilary C. Thomas, had hurriedly relocated to Thailand.

I was told that he lost his house as a consequence of the debts arising from International Chess.

Lets hope he gets a long sentence & burn his book(s). Not quite right to pass that one onto Barnardos.

Bad enough week with all those frightened children over scary clowns.
