The most surprising thing, arguably, is that this hasn't been undertaken before now.

But how many of the general public will have the slightest interest in it? Will it be a financial flop?

Fischer was a huge celebrity in the US four decades ago. I suspect quite a few (even non-players) will recognise his name even now.....

If they can make a blockbuster about the racing driver James Hunt, who I would imagine would have limited recognition from the general public, I don’t see why Fischer shouldn’t work too

Well, speeding cars are more exciting to look at than chessboards (in most people's opinion if not mine) and it may also be relevant that Hunt and Fischer were not at the same end of the sexual-activity scale. But sure, if you can make watchable films about artists and mathematicians, why not chessplayers.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I have always thought that James Woods would be ideal casting as Fischer, both because of his facial resemblance and his line in brash, forceful characters.
