R vs N

Post by Arshad Ali » Thu Apr 17, 2014 2:33 pm

Might any of the learned people here know the title and author of a German book devoted to R vs N?

While I'm on the topic of books, does anyone know where I could get a copy of the original Russian version of Shereshevsky and Slutsky's 2-volume "Mastering the Endgame?" The English translation was roughly half the size of the original Russian (they took out half the game examples). I had volume 1 of the original Russian -- which I acquired in Riga in '95 -- but (I think) I sold it when getting rid of my chess book collection in England four years back.

Do you really need a book? I imagine for the one or two times you will ever see it in you life, it should be easy enough to figure out the drawing method for the knight
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Bare R vs. N only needs a couple of pages; it's pawns that provide the complication. I'm not sure whether the book was R vs. N or R+N vs. R. I'm thinking perhaps it was the latter.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Quality Chess did a book on R v 2 minor pieces a few years back. I'd imagine some part of it would be devoted to R v N, although that's not at all obvious from looking at the contents.

There was Averbakh's Rook v. Minor Piece Endings. Perhaps there was a German edition.

Nah, I've got that one. This was different -- something erudite on a very narrow topic in a way only the Teutonic mind can produce. Maybe it's gone down the memory hole.

Got the trio (rook, minor piece, queenless) as well as most everything else by Nunn as well.

This post takes the term grammar Nazi to a whole new level!
