Interesting article - however gridlock has been made worse with the introduction of bus lanes. Roads were first made passable for the carriage trade in the 18 th century as passengers even then had problems with highway men and accidents resulting from poor road maintenance causing over turned vehicles.
The 17 th century saw a poorly maintained highway causing the death of William III who came to grief when his horse stumbled on a mole hill.
King Edward VII was a motoring enthusiast who undoubtably encouraged the improvements of roads for his fleet of cars.
