Andrew Martin Untranslated
....and as it is the Festive Season....
soheil_hooshdaran in Andrew thread on 'YouTube Chess Instruction' asks:
"Do you have any work which I may translate, IM Martin?"
First he will have to translate the Cockney Rhyming Slang.
"The Goldie Gardens the Barry."
Goldie = Goldie Hawn - Pawn
Gardens = Garden Rake - Takes
Barry = Barry White - Knight
"Bonnnie played Beautiful"
Bonnie = Bonnie Lassie - Boris Spassky
Beautiful - Beautiful Kisser - Bobby Fischer.
This is great fun, please join in.

Re: Andrew Martin Untranslated
Interesting, so the claim is that there is cockney rhyming slang for chess pieces? I would be interested in hearing all terms if so.

The whole of London is a chessboard.
The King's Road, Queen's Wharf, Knightsbridge, Bishopsgate,
The Rook and Raven, The Elelphant and Castle.
And there are loads of Pawn shops.

One piece of cockney which has passed from chess into much more general usage is the expression "In a two and eight".
Most dictionaries will tell you that this is rhyming slang for "in a state" but originally among chess players it would have been "in a mate' indicating that there is no possible escape from the situation.

I guess players such as Konstantinopolosky aren't going to feature in this post.

At the start of the game there is a Donald in each corner of the board.
Re: Andrew Martin Untranslated
Donalds feature heavily in Bridge as well (Donald Trumps)
