Cathy in the Ukraine

Post by Neil Graham » Thu May 07, 2015 7:33 pm

Today I've received an e-mail from Cathy Warwick (Cathy Forbes) saying that her she's lost her credit card and her passport has been impounded whilst on a tour of the Ukraine - please could she have a short-term loan! I'm quite surprised that my e-mail address is in Cathy's address book and of course I'm fully aware that this hack is more likely to be from Lagos than Kiev.

Just wondered if anyone else had received one?

I've not received that particular email, but in the past I have received several almost identically worded emails purportedly from other people.

It is of course a scam and you should not in any way respond, other than to alert Cathy if you can.

Standard scam I would agree.

I tend to just directly email the person saying their email has been hacked.

Unfortunately I have no contact details for Cathy. Obviously I am not going to respond to the e-mail address quoted for her in the message to me. If anyone who is in contact with her can advise her that this has occurred.

The very same message has found its way into my spam folder.
Even if it hadn't I would have binned it immediately.

I had a similar e-mail last year, some outfit called the ecf-or something like that- asking for my credit card details because they were stranded. Some scam about increased membership fees or something, just deleted it.

Standard Phishing scam - I had an identical one from Paul Bielby a few years ago, it started “As I write this I am in tears…” Before going into having credit cards stolen. Just ignore.

I believe that Cathy has reverted to her maiden name these days anyway......

Does she still play chess? I remember she once wrote a book of poems?

Sporadically in recent years, I think. I recall seeing her poetry book on the chess bookstalls a few times ;)

Only time I’ve never seen anything connected to Cathy is on one of the GM video magazines, where she was doing coverage of the Spassky / Fischer 92 re-match (didn’t she actually play Fisher on a fold up set at the event?).

There’s a good bit where she is interviewing Zita (the young girl who got Fisher back into the limelight) Zita is introduced as “Bobby’s Girl!” in the caption, and Cathy is trying to hint at any romantic involvement between to two - Zita is trying to be polite while visibly cringing at the very thought of it

I wouldn’t like to guess at Zita’s motives in getting involved *cough cough possible cut of 6 Mill*

She did indeed play Fischer in an off hand game - his only recorded encounter with a woman (unless some with the Polgars have now emerged)

Though it was in the mid-match interval between Belgrade and Montenegro, so not his "last ever recorded game" as has also been claimed.
