Well, the previous (voluntary) Nb3 was not very shirov-like. One has to be consistent ...

(You see, 9...d5 was a possible idea for Black even before 9 g4. Unless 9 g4 stops 9...d5 for some tactical reason - which it might - then it is bad).

oh, and Emms has just played it.

Gone a bit quiet here?

The games finished a little early today although I wasn't really watching but working.

That's true. But on another day or another competition it could happen.
And that day is Friday! :-D

The Talbots have been paired to play each other in round 5

I was almost speechless this morn when Michael Flatt pulled the rug out from under the great pairing debate.

Interesting that events have conspired to make it raise its head in the 5th round of the Major Open.

Pairings for the British still not available. It shows contempt for the players not to make them available in a timely manner, particularly as they could be done with a touch of a button were it not for Luddite attitudes amongst some of the arbiters.

Simon Williams seemed to self destruct against David Howell, so that leaves three players, Howell, Hawkins and Richard Pert as leaders. Presumably then it's Howell v Richard Pert with Hawkins to float.

The Events are being held in Rootes Building (building 55 on map), on the ground floor by the entrance is a Costa Cafe.
Playing halls are on the top floor.Map: http://www.britishchesschampionships.co ... hipMap.pdf

Parking is free but visitors are advised to download and display a parking permit (different one for each week). Permit: http://www.britishchesschampionships.co ... g-permits/
Car park 7 is nearest the hall.

It is an enormous site, but just follow University Road (off Gibbet Hill Road) right to the end.

I agree with the above, the post code on the website took me virtually to the building, but for the road bring closed. I grabbed the last space in car park 7 but they mentioned 8 and 15 were the next nearest. As always, parking in a public car park is at your own risk, I know of at least one disgruntled player who has suffered damage to a car and that was a commuter playing in the afternoon rather than one parked there for the whole week

Oh, and to keep track of results take a laptop or smart phone.

Everything is online and very little information is displayed at the venue.

It was quite frustrating not to see results posted at the venue (at least on the day I visited).

All results are added to the pairing sheets on the arbiters' desk and you can refer to those.

The result is recorded almost as soon as it is handed in.

0. WIM Richards Heather S 2141 (2½) - (2½) IM Cooper John G 2313

My predictions -

1. 1-0
2. 1-0
3. 1/2
4. 1-0
5. 0-1
6. 1/2
7. 0-1
8. 0-1
9. 1/2
0. 1/2

I'd like to include the Major Open top board in the above, but I've no idea of the form between the two players.

Already worried about my draw prediction for bd. 6 - Mark v. Marcus.

Instead of going commando in the opening jungle Marcus appears to be going pants!
