I'll make a few predictions, seeing as how this is going to be the first round I'll be able to watch live.

Emms 0-1 Howell
Gormally 0.5-0.5 Hawkins
Pert 1-0 Hebden
Arkell 1-0 Weaving
Flear 1-0 Kalaiyalahan
Mason 0.5-0.5 Pert
Summerscale 1-0 Golding
Hill 0-1 Jackson
Rudd 1-0 Batchelor
Williams 1-0 Wadsworth.

24 live boards this year is a great effort.

From the sounds of things they've had a lot of trouble with the live commentary so far in the Championships.

600 at last Olympiad.

David Howell up to his old tricks: 14 minutes late today. In the Irish Championships we have one or two players who regularly do this and I think it's an insult to opponents.

Okay, both those examples (especially the Olympiad one) completely dwarfs the British, but I'm happy getting to see the top 24, and wanted to give some praise to the volunteers who make it happen.

On a different note, has the commentary managed to get going yet?

Isn't there 32 live boards? That's pretty good going considering there are 75 players.

WTF! Engine hates it (but prefers pawn capture). Maybe the pawn slipped out of Jack's fingers and fell on e4? I guess he will reveal all tonight.

I found one precedent (from EU under-16s 1994); Black was so shocked he replied Nbd7 (but eventually won).

Sabrina's board seems to have broken down alas?

Boards 26 and 32 are also not working, judging by few moves made and indicated current move time.

Still no joy with the commentary. I imagine the commentators/ technical guys on site are just as frustrated about the situation as the people viewing at home, but its desperately disappointing.
