EU Youth Championships

The EU Youth Championships take place in the beginning of August with categories U8, U10, U12, U14

Any ideas what is going on? Neither event seems to make it to the FIDE calendar.

I don't know the status of European Union events, but don't believe they are anything to do with FIDE.

Of course, we don't yet know whether UK players will even be eligible!

The Czech one claims itself as under the auspices of the ECU, whilst the Mureck one is just under the Austrian Federation.

As of two years ago when I was involved in sending players from England: the Czech one is the official EU event and Mureck is the unofficial one. Mureck used to be the official event but then the EU official status was awarded to the Czechs. Mureck have continued to organise their event and have carried on using the title. More important than the status of either event is that both are very good value compared to the main World/European Youth/Schools event albeit the standard is not as strong. I think the two events are both ideal for an inexperienced squad to sample an international event. I've been to the Mureck event once with a group of Welsh juniors and it was one of my favourite trips, albeit I wasn't prepared for temperatures of 43 degrees!

My understanding was that Mureck held a complimentary championship to the official EU youth with age groups U9, U11, U13, U15. This year there appears to be a deliberate clash in terms of age groups/timing. This seems to be to everyone's detriment, so I was just wondering what the story is?

Sorry, just seen that it is listed, didn't scroll down far enough. Very unfortunate clash with the Mureck event.

is there but only under "Affiliated Calendar- events under the patronage of the ECU at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the link includes the wording "The organizer of the Championship is Czech Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union."
