Chess Informant

Post by Nevil Chan » Sat Aug 06, 2016 10:54 pm

The family of Colin Crouch have donated his chess library to Harrow Chess Club. The collection includes Informant numbers 1-84 which the club would like to pass on to another enthusiast.

Old editions of Informator are fascinating things. I would recommend.

Informator 1 is worth a fair bit of money I believe.

I doubt that any print versions of Informator are worth anything, really. There are always people putting them on EBay and they don't sell. The trouble is that the digital versions take up about 0.5% of the space and whilst you don't get everything you get with the print versions, you can get by.

Hopefully, someone will take Colin's copies.

The very first edition (issued in 1966 and apparently sold out quickly) may possibly be worth something.

As with most people I suspect, mine is the second edition (issued in 1967)

The early volumes were also reprinted en masse in the early 1970s I believe (the reprinted Vol 1 is apparently smaller than the 1966/67 version)

Hi,

I did a piece about Informant No1. a few weeks back.

http://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-blog/th ... f-doom.319

No Best Game in Vol 1. It did not start till volume 4 the first best game was Fischer - Stein,
Sousse 1966 which does not 'officially' exist. Fischer walked out and all his games were annulled.

I came up with my own best game from Vol 1.

H. Hecht - R. Keene, Switzerland, 1966

Final position.

My Vol 1 is a bit battered but still intact. It's E-Bayable but I only sell doublers I pick up in junk shops.
and of course any BCO/MCO/NCO I find which I sell for 10p warning any reader Not to buy it.

This was the last one I sold , some lad in Yorkshire bought it.

(good picture on the front of that Blog...should be on the cover of some chess book....not an opening book.)

Volumes 1-3 had their best games rated retrospectively about two decades ago.

The "winner" of the first volume was Spassky-Petrosian, game 7 from the 1966 WC match (the Torre Attack exchange sacrifice one)

Hi Matt,

"Volumes 1-3 had their best games rated retrospectively about two decades ago."

Obviously a fix. They chose it because it was well known, I bet they never played over every game.

And anyway games from World Championship matches should be excluded.
