Whilst I wait for Caruana to reply
Whilst I wait for Caruana to reply
I asked Fabiano Caruana the following question and the buffoon has taken more than an hour to get back to me(!) He honestly thinks somebody as busy and important as me has all day to wait for him! I really can't believe it.
Anyway
My question is to the good players on here:
"if anyone in the world played 1. F3 against you would you guarantee you would win every game?"

Didn't Bobby Fischer do rather well with 1 f3 - against our own Nigel Short? Or maybe not.

To be fair, that is a rather obscure question.

I wouldn't be winning every game against players of my own standard, let alone anyone in the world (Carlsen!). It's not a good move but it's not going to make that much difference.

You can pretty much bet it will be shortly followed by d4, Nc3 and e4 in some or other order. These early move "novelties" have a tendency to veer back towards a main line where playing them can be justified.
One would assume that caruana has spent those hours deeply analysing the position before getting back to you, as all top grand masters are wont to do when asked about strange openings.

Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

I think Short faced the 1.f3 AND 2.Kf2 nonsense that lots of cocky young kids were playing on the net at the time. Naturally, it looks impressive when you win and although Short did lose on the Black side, causing him to speculate that White may have been Fischer, it turned out that he was just facing a trickster with a computer program.
I once saw a friend of mine get hit with these White moves at the Major Open in Edinburgh - his opponent, a young lad trying to show-off to some spectating friends. But IIRC, the lad wasn't smiling for too long, once the centre disintegrated and some heavy artillery appeared on the open file.

@Colin - My guess would be a young Ali Mortazavi for the White culprit
Re: Whilst I wait for Caruana to reply
If f3 is followed up by g4, I could probably win against anybody playing White.

1.f3 d4 2.f4 We have gone Dutch.
1.f3 e5 2.e4 Nf6 3.f4 We have gone to Latvia.
It's 1...f6 that is a bit iffy. There you are on your way to Toulouse.

I was banned from the forum so couldnt reply... interestingly Susan Polgar replied to me on twitter:
"Not necessarily. Good chances but not 100% results."
I was really suprised by this tbh as I thought and was told that 1.F3 was an appalling opening move.
