Guess Korchnoi thought Taimanov a patzer:

He played it a few times subsequent to that as well IIRC.

thanks, i would have never been able to find this otherwise.

Roger thanks for the info

did Nigel Short really say ""I am acutely conscious, from vast experience in opens, that guys around, say 2100 or more can definitely play chess and that one often has to work very hard to beat them."

its on lichess and quoted here like https://github.com/ornicar/lila/blob/ma ... uote.scala

No idea, but it would be no surprise - you only need to see the British/sundry weekenders to see players mildly weaker than Short having to really work at it at times. Some fast wins, but far from all of them.

Especially if you slide it towards 2200 players or 2100 rated juniors etc.

Its the same with any sort of big grading gap - the stronger player does eventually get there nearly all the time, but it is often distinctly hard work!

I can't for the life of me see why any of this matters. I've probably said to someone that I always do well against the Caro-Kann. Doubtless famous people say similar things. Doubtless, like me, they didn't think it was a manifesto commitment.

Just to be sure, do you mean you don't understand why it matters if people are quoted as saying things they didn't say?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Sometimes it matters. Not remotely for any of this, though.

The internet is full of false and misattributed quotations. You know why? Because of people who think it doesn't matter.

Maybe those people are right?

Lots of these "quotes" are just offhand comments of no great importance that are then immortalised by lesser chess players as if all words uttered by GM's are like zen koans that can unlock hidden playing strength.

Maybe those people won't mind if things they haven't said start appearing all over the shop attributed to them.

I'm sure Korchnoi & Petrosian turn in their graves when a non exact wording of something they once said about the Dutch defence is uttered.

Maybe it might be more respectful to people in the graves not to make up stuff about them, mmm?
