Would an underpromotion have saved me here.. move 42

Post by Kevin O'Rourke » Tue Oct 18, 2016 9:49 am

Hi all. I didn't finish this game well and it makes it worse that it was a correspondant game so i had 3 days to make a move. However, i think i bottled an underpromotion on move 42 that may have saved the game.

They don't come up very often and I think i greedily held onto the 7th rank pawn hoping to make it a queen (and at least win a rook)

You mean g8=N check, gaining a vital tempo if he takes it. I suspect it's the only decent move, although whether winning for you would require some analysis.

Since I lost I would have been happy with a draw if the extra piece can save me.

My computer still thinks black is winning but it depends if my opponant would have found the moves

I don't see how throwing in 42.g8=N+, Kd8 helps at all. The black rook is now free to join the mating attack.

What about 48.Kf2 instead of 48.Kg2?

Doesn't that transpose after 48....Qd2+?

50 Kf2 was worth trying though as black has to work a bit harder for the point there.

I think move 42 was the only time the pawn could be pushed forward and it had to be a knight at that point otherwise it’s mate. Frustrating that there doesn’t seem to be a way to get the pawn home (either as a queen or as a knight but with better prospects i.e. having extra minor piece)

I had banked on this pawn becoming at least a knight and trying to make the best use of this surprise tempo. Also remember my opponent may not have been seriously considering the under promotion.
