Why do I plau chess?

Post by soheil_hooshdaran » Thu Mar 30, 2017 4:41 am

Hi
The question is Why do I play in such tournaments? For rating and honor or for learning new things?

That's quite a deep question ...

Most people who play (and continue to do so) must 'enjoy' playing to some extent. In reality this can mean anything from demonstrating their superiority, solving problems, socialising with club-mates, etc. The people who seem to lose enthusiasm (from my observations) are those that are primarily results-driven ... once they stop haveing 'their best year ever' and start to plateau then they play less. The lack of practice means they are less sharp and results worsen and within 2-3 years they stop completely.

A healthier balance - in wanting to play 'good' or 'decent' chess, learn as you go and at least maintain results is likelyu to have more longevity.

You could read Chess For life for examples of how people continue to play into middle-age and beyond - but the players in question had already reached a very high level. There's also quite a large number of 'retrurners' to the game - but again, that seems more likley if you left the game at a fairly high level of ability.
