On page 18 of the 'Moscow Variation' by Leonard Pickett, pub 1977.

In this position between a game, Hasin - Kolevit, Moscow 1974 (White has just played 18.Bc1-f4.

Pickett writes: 'the famous Eccles' and nothing more.

Any idea to what he is referring too. I cannot find the original game or even the players anywhere.

Yes that is what I did. Where is the delete function...quick before Carl comes back.

I'd guess that the reference is to the Eccles of The Goon Show, though I have no idea what connection is being drawn.

To delete, use the X. But it may not work if somebody else has posted!

The delete thing is on a timer so Carl or Jack will have to delete those last bits.

I thought of the Goon Show 'Eccles' and the cake. Even looked for an 'Eccles Mate'.

I've found the game with correct names. White was B. Shashin (not Hasin as in the book).

page 56 of 'Improve your Chess Tactics' by Yakov Neishtadt has this position.

With White to play. So that bit is sorted. Now for 'Eccles'.

Great finish, worthy of a Manticore,,,but maybe one loss too many for Eccles: alas disappeared from chess history?

Indeed, a couple of the Manticores play for Eccles in the Manchester League

I have found a chess player active from 2006-2008 on Red Hot Pawn called 'the famous eccles'.

Book on piano is Wade's 'Soviet Chess' a cheap pick up from a junk shop. Also a large picture of
all those taking part in the 1926 BCF Championships. I recently sent this picture to Edward Winter

I've been wandering about Edinburgh showing the picture to old people asking if they recognise anyone.

So far have identified Yates and someone who may be the niece of Mrs Clackett (my next door neighbour,
also mother of Dolly Clackett the barmaid in Bells). Though she is not too sure, her eyes are playing her up.

I'm wondering if one of the players in that picture is called Eccles. Then I'll know I'm in a time warp

We have to find Leonard (Len) Pickett. No sleep for no one till we do.

It's Eccles v. Bluebottle -

"I'm the famous Eccles..." was one catchphrase from the Goon Show

Another was Bluebottle's "I don't like this game!"

Black's 11... O-O-O is not to be liked.

The game Shashin-Kolevit was also given in Julian Hodgson's Chess Travellers Quiz Book, amongst others.
