As an indication of Len Pickett's playing strength, here's a creditable draw of his as white against rising star Joe Gallagher. Lewisham International 1984, Round 3.

Looking like we will never know. I thought it might be rhyming slang 'Eccles Cake = Checkmate'.

Now trying to help Justin figure which book Len Deighton used in 'Funeral in Berlin'.
