Many thanks to John Clarke and John Collins for the fascinating details (and memories) of Gerald Abrahams. Does anyone else have any memories of meeting him or playing games with him, or indeed knowing him in general? He died in 1980 and was born in 1907. I wonder which years he was most active over the chess board? There is a great photo of him (from the National Portrait Gallery) here:

I wonder if obituaries of Abrahams were published in chess magazines of the time?

A nice mention of Abrahams here by Leonard Barden:

More on Gerald Abrahams here:

(Can I plead again for the chess history stuff to be moved to a separate thread?)

One more intriguing snippet about Gerald Abrahams, which I've only just managed to track down again. According to Chess no. 204 (Sept 1952), he was " .... warned off [ie banned from] British racecourses by Tattersalls' in connection with a four-year-old debt of 75 pounds".

At that time 75 quid was about a month's salary. Why so much, and why allowed to run on so long? There's a lot not being told here.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

I also recall lengthy in letter in CHESS from Abrahams correcting B.H.Wood on the sales of his fiction books.

I'll see if I can dig it out.

See if I can dig it out.

Yes 90% of this thread should be moved to the history bit.
