"David Sedgwick wishes it to be known he has suffered a stroke. There is no paralysis or other traumatic damage but he is unlikely to be able to respond to emails or messages for at least the next 2 weeks."

The wording is David's. He is currently in hospital.
If he's had no paralysis, then that's good news. It took me months to get my right side back to nearly normal after my stroke. I'm sure a full recovery is possible.

So, get well soon David, and take the advice my neurologist gave to me.

1. Keep taking the tablets

2. Don't take up smoking

3. Don't go bungee-jumping.

David so sorry to hear this. Still if you read this it is a good sign! Take care and all the very best in your road to recovery.

That's good advice for everybody...

After my stroke, I visited the GP and asked if it would damage me if I resumed playing chess and got the answer, "No - but it will probably damage your rating." (It did.) I found that chess, watching countdown etc. were useful as I had some sort of measure of brain function. If you're used to usually getting 7+-letter words on Countdown, and can't get more than 4 or 5 letters, you know there's a problem, but when you gradually get 6 and the odd 7, it's a sign of improvement.
When I was allowed to drive again, I went to a supermarket, where there was a screaming child. I thought, "Oh, stop that ****ing noise", then everyone turned round to look at me, so I must have said it aloud. (Admittedly, most of them smiled and nodded.)

So the brain does funny things... But strokes affect different people differently, and you can make a full recovery.

I will echo previous sentiment and wish David a speedy recovery.

A Facebook post from an hour ago:

Bill Linton:
"Just had a call fom David. He is slightly worse than he was last time we spoke, but still sounds totally normal.
He is now in Croydon University Hospital, ward Purley 3."

In another place it has been reported that DS has gone from worse to slightly worse.

We envisage progress from slightly worse to equality (=).

I went to see David yesterday and he is not at all well. He cannot discover what might be causing this, because that would involve seeing a doctor, a service the hospital does not appear to provide. I shall return tomorrow, hoping to hear of progress.

update : There will be no progress. The doctors don't do rounds at weekends.

So sad to hear this news. David helped me so much with my health problems when playing in Guernsey. A true friend.

It's nice to see everyone coming together to wish David back to full health, I'd like to add my wishes to the list too.

David is still languishing in Croydon University Hospital - ward Purley 3 - and would relish visitors and phone calls.

Visiting times are 2-4 and 6-8, but please ring him first. His phone number is 0771 2765486.

Just a thought but it might be better to say that you can provide David's number on request rather than placing it on a public forum.
