Nigel Short: Chess Challenger Quiz

Post by Adam Raoof » Thu Nov 24, 2011 9:02 am

1. CJ got all the top players (and some other chess celebs) to sign a copy of this book at the British in Sheffield 2011: can you name all the signatories? I count 23 names.

2. I now have the book, and I would like to auction this book and give the money to a chess cause on CJ's behalf - how much do you think I could raise?

I have something similar signed by some of those playing at Hastings (2010/11). With thanks to Stewart Reuben who followed up the idea and insisted I keep the menu (I think that is what it was). Not sure if it is worth anything, but it made a nice souvenir of that New Year's dinner.

I have 4 copies of the Certificate of Merit Levels 2/3 signed by 8 of the players in the LCC (Hikaru has yet to do so), Korchnoi and Kasparov. The problem is similar to Adam's. How do I provide somebody with a way of recognising each signature. I am more minded to give them as prizes or presents. Certainly going on ebay with all 4 simultaneously would not be effective.
In case anybody wonders, I decided to limit it to the superstars. There have probably been 20 other GMs at the Classic so far.

I also have the scoresheets of Kasparov Korchnoi and Smyslov Ribli 1983. Also at least one Phillips & Drew. I have always presumed such mementos can only go up in value.

Yes, I can see them all clearly.....when I say all, I mean most, well when I say most, I mean some. OK just one or two then. Here goes - from the top:

Miss AS (that well known chess player from Ukraine, I think....)
PK Venl (Indian, I think)
Archie Ti (China obviously...)
Susan Lalic (obviously, well known English Chess player)
Keith Arkell (our very own, happy go lucky, friendly GM)
P Luonlly (Do not know him/her at all, I'm afraid)
Putin (how did he get in?)
Pam Ayres (very eclectic line-up...)
Stuart Conquest (obviously to add a touch of class to the proceedings - very clear!)
Malule (not sure I know this one...)
Stewart Reuben (does he play chess? - only kidding Stewart!)
Mark Hebden (clearly!)

There we go. All sorted!

Edit: Being as this is a quiz, do I win any prizes, Adam? - Hope you are feeling better today.
Edit again: I can not see the right hand page...

Alasdair - you are clearly a super-being at deciphering signatures!

I think Malcolm Pein's signature is there, above Stewart Reuben's signature. Let me see if I can decipher some of the others, or agree with what has been posted so far. EDIT: Actually, Malcolm wasn't there, was he? Maybe another Malcolm? And his signature in the London Chess Classic programme isn't quite the same as the one here.

Left-hand page:

Top row: Michael Adams, Peter Wells
Next row: Andrew (Ledger?), Susan Lalic
Next row: Keith Arkell
Next row: Danny Gormally
Next row: (scribble)
Next row: (scribble)
Sideways: Stuart Conquest
Next row: Malcolm Pein (?)
Next row: Stewart Reuben
Bottom row: Mark Hebden

Right-hand page:

Top row: Stephen Gordon, David Howell
Next row: Gawain Jones
Next row: (scribble)
Next row: (scribble), Nick Pert, Jovanka Houska
Next row: Raymond Keene (?)
Next row: Richard Pert, Jack Rudd
Bottom row: Aaron Summerscale

N ZlehRe (Russian?)
Jovanka Houska,
Beautiful signature - Danny King?
Nick Pert
Richard Pert
Jack Rudd
Aaron Summerscale

Adam,

If you want to raise money for charity, you could auction this at one of CJ's upcoming events together with an hour of chess with one of the above mentioned GMs (probably not Tinky Winky as I am unsure whether he actually plays) - if they are willing of course. It then gives them something permanent to hang onto after.

I am sure that there would be chess fans who have a few pennies at those events.
