Has anyone noticed that one of the past British Champions has been purged from the FIDE rating list?
Not one you might expect, but a famous name in British chess.

His crime would appear to have been to play in a 4NCL game whilst only being a Bronze member.

You're allowed to play in the 4NCL for one weekend without being any type of member, but does that concession apply to Bronze?

How much time and effort are the ECF wasting on this sort of malicious pursuit?

Re: Players ceasing to exist
He hasn't ceased to exist, his rating has presumably just been suspended. When/if he rejoins, it will be unsuspended. A bit less hyperbole would help. It would, admittedly, be nice to be able to see the historical data still. I thought that was still possible?

If you use the FIDE site to get a list of living British IMs, you don't get a complete list. Are any others missing? Inactive players will remain present.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:He hasn't ceased to exist, his rating has presumably just been suspended.

http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=400360. Obviously strong in his day....but what is the point of keeping inactive players on with a grade which is well out of date?

Because they'll return with the same rating if they come back to competitive play. (I'll accept this is unlikely to happen in the case of Penrose, but there are several cases of people's returning to FIDE-rated chess after many years' absence.)Gavin Strachan wrote:http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=400360. Re: Players ceasing to exist
It's part of the specification of an Elo style system. FIDE are researching the alternative practicalities of a Glicko system. It's alleged that a test run ranked Matthew Sadler as world number one, because he returned to active play with a good result. Australia use a Glicko system. Players returning to Australia are aware that their first tournament back is critical. A good performance will boost their local rating and ranking, whilst a poor performance will cause their rating to plummet.IM Jack Rudd wrote: Because they'll return with the same rating if they come back to competitive play.
