Whoops. Just noticed that Black can reply with ...c5 with ...Ra6 to follow, and that after Bb8, Black can simply move his rook back to c8 and wins the bishop.Lewis Martin wrote: At one point, Hawkins had the opportunity to win a pawn on a7. Re: The British itself!
There a player in the Weekend tournaments making critical comments.
Read it now before it's deleted for being negative.

The largest tournament (Seniors) starts Saturday. The British and Major Open have the day off for Saturday, but I don't know what will happen Sunday as I don't think there are enough boards to cram in the British, Major Open, the Seniors and the weekender. It's probably going to be a problem for the first three days of next week as well. There's space elsewhere on the campus and the air-conditioning is a boon, but by past standards, the room isn't big enough

I think the Major Open is being moved to another building from Sunday.

The toilet block would be appropriate.IM Jack Rudd wrote:I think the Major Open is being moved to another building from Sunday.

The Major Open is not dead, but really - it needs a rethink. If you offered an organiser the opportunity to run a norm swiss alongside the British and with no venue costs, they would jump at the chance.
The problem is the impact it has on the British. Therefore I do lean towards making the British a truly Open event, OR a prestigious closed event with a truly Major open alongside, with a qualifying place on offer.

The latter was also a suggestion I made a number of years ago. I think it's worth considering.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

This would be my preference. I recently stumbled across a thread elsewhere when somebody criticised me for making this suggestion. That was 2008.
I’m assuming it’s not economically feasible though and/or would be unpopular amongst those who currently play in the British.

Very exciting games this year in the main championship event!
Does anyone know what is happening in the Junior Championship events - the website is not being updated. Can anyone give us some regular updates on winners etc?
Many thanks in advance,
K

Can now see the results of the U16s, U13s and U8s. Something very strange happened in the second to last round of the U8s?

After 4 rounds there were only two players on 4/4. After five rounds one of them had 5/5 (with a + (bye) shown as the result in Round 5) and the other had 4.5/5 (with an = (draw by default) shown as the result in Round 5).Barry Sandercock wrote:What happened ?

Very pleased to see Yang-Fan draw with Hawkins and he had black.I remember playing Yang- Fan when he was 8 and it was clear to me that he was going to be very good at chess.I have a number of pictures of him and Peter winning all sorts of chess events

The draw is up.
Howell-Hawkins hopefully will be a good game. Howell will want to win it.
Pert-Pert might be a 'gentlemanly/brotherly' draw.
And... I am for one, looking forward to Rudd-Williams!
