Suggesting it for the British Chess Championships was just a joke. No cruise ship has adequate conference facilities.
Running say a 20-30 player chess event aboard a cruise ship is very cheap. Basically you have to convince the cruise line that you will get adequate response. Bob Kane was working on that when he was ousted.
They provide the facilities. They give a cabin to the tournament director. He probably won't make much of a profit.
The players pay for cabins for the cruise.
If you want any prize money, you would have to charge the entrants.
This is done all the time for bridge on Cunard, P&O and I believe Fred Olsen.
I am on a cruise ship. In the casino they have an electronic table that deals the cards and oversees the action. Players pay an entry fee of $60. $50 from each entry fee is returned as prize money. The first day I won against 8 opponents. Thus I got $300 and the runner-up $150. I came nowhere the other two times it took place. Thus it is low maintenance for the cruise company.

From the BBC News website today.

I thought I ought to share given the extremely negative posts last year.

Yes, had seen that interesting news

Oddly. I have been to numbers 7 & 9 (Amsterdam & Vancouver, both recommended especially the latter) but not into number 8 Hull (although I have been over the Humber Bridge)

I've been to Reykjavik, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Vancouver and Agra.
I don't rate Mexico City highly. Agra was just the Taj Mahal experience.
If we can get the venue in Hull in 2017, I would definitwely go for it. But I understand the council is hogging all the major venues currently.

I did notice that the only one of the other cities I've been to is Amsterdam which I didn't particularly care for personally.

The main reason I posted the link was to counter certain prejudices against Hull (which to an extent I can understand but a contributor seemed more worried about what his friends might think than listening with an open mind about what Hull might have to offer) and also the suggestion that Northern cities were not suitable for major chess events.

Careful - Rough Guide recommended Cork as one of the ten best cities to visit some years ago. Having spent ten years of my life there, I can state with confidence that this claim would only be true in a world where Hull was one of the other nine.

But Cork hosted the first EU Chess Championship successfully. Liverpool also had a good event. Hull could do the same.

I wasn't talking about the ability to host a chess event!

In the entries list on the website, there are six headings, Name, Club, Fedn., FIDE., ECF and TR. Can anyone please tell me what the TR. stands for?It shows my ECF grade as 146 which is correct and my TR. as 134. I can't figure out what that is, as my grade has never been 134.

It looks like a conversion of your FIDE rating.
