Doesn't appear to be that expensive either. For a cruise ship that could carry say a 1000 people, various companies were offering 13 nights at between £500-£700 all in which is not bad and I'm sure the ECF could negotiate lower rates if the idea had legs. The publicity could be awesome particularly if conditions at sea get a bit choppy during the tournament.

Plenty of bridge and poker events on cruise ships - so no reason it shouldnt work, other than chess players being notoriously tighter than those other two groups.

Poker players do tend to be a bit richer though was watching a pro poker player on Full tilt the other week drop $40,000 dollars in a cash game, in the space of about an hour. How many Chess tournaments would we have to win to make that sort of money?

Chess events have taken place aboard cruise ships. In 1994 in Moscow the US Virgin Islands delegate proposed they hold the FIDE Congress on board a Caribben Cruise ship. You should have seen the delegates eyes light up. Many have their expenses paid. I have been aboard a Windstar Cruise in the Caribbean where the business meeting of course enabled the company to set the expenses off against tax.
I had meant to write the British Chess Championships. The problem is there woujld never be adequate conference facilities.
But I am currently on a cruise going today towards Colombia. My balcony could house two games.
Bob Kane was in discussions with the Fred Olsen line about a chess tournament on board ship. I was to be the organiser. Presumably it foundered when he was voted out. Bridge tournaments are commonplace.

I can remember playing at Hastings when the venue was the Pier. There was ferocious gales one day, with waves crashing against the Pier. Many of the contestants were left sea sick.

Did I read recently that the world senior championship was played aboard a cruise ship? Walter Brown won it on that occasion.

Personally I’m not opposed at all to the idea - play your game, then stop off and explore the next port. Mind you I don’t get sea sick!

How about a Mind Sports cruise: Chess, Bridge, Poker, Backgammon, whatever else you fancy, with tournaments and master classes to learn other Mind Sports.

I think you'll find that was a US Senior championship.

It was indeed the 2014 US senior champs. Both chess and poker were played on that cruise ship. Here's a report including a couple of games by the great man.

Presumably the people playing in the shorter tournaments will leave and arrive by helicopter?

For those without that kind of money they could just dock at a port at various intervals.

Or they could hold it on the USS Enterprise and just beam people up or down according to the playing schedule.

Pul Kelly was the host for some cruises for that. I don't know which ship. Presumably it wasn't successful.
