Having played Tim Herring at one of the Birmingham 4NCL congresses he is far too modest about his chess playing ability. It's great that in spite of everything some new faces are coming forward to take on roles within the ECF.

I thought the recent Council meeting approved the reinstatement of the role of Chairman, in line with the Pearce recommendations, not the creation of a Directorate of Women's Chess. Why bother putting structural reforms to the voting members, if the Directors then proceed to ignore them?

Quite true. I would have thought that there was a stronger case to split the Home Directorate into a Home (domestic competitions) and one or two Technical Directorates encompassing Grading and Arbiting.

How on earth did Arbiting get partitioned into Home and International ? And, how can the training and progression of Arbiters through the different grades be effectively managed when responsibility is split between two separate Directorates?

The independent Chess Arbiters' Association, or at least some key individuals within it, do seem to have quite a significant role in running of Arbiter training courses. Shouldn't their role gain formal recognition within the ECF organisation?

Sarah Longson has not been appointed a director but is a director designate precisely because Council would need to effect her appointment as a director, including by passing a resolution to increase from ten the limit on the number of directors.

Thanks for your kind words, and best wishes to Sarah in her new role. As regards the Sage of Bourne End's typically sour and negative comment, probably the less said the better - save to observe that the phrase "Never apologise, never explain" springs irresistibly to mind.
