First time I have heard of Anum but she seems a very promising player judging by the following game. Anum was rated at 1332 while her opponent was 1497. OK she could have won a piece for nothing on move 12 but apart from that it looked pretty smooth for an U-10!

Re: Player of the Year
It's not a piece for nothing, surely, it's two pieces for rook and pawn, and it's not immediately obvious who it favours in that position.

Whoops, agreed Jack, I didn't consider that properly 12 cxd5 Qxd5 13 Qxa6 Qxh1 14 Nd2 Qxh2 15 Qa3 leaves White with a big plus according to the computer but in practical play its not that obvious. Certainly it doesn't justify the 'for nothing' comment I made. If Anum saw this I'm even more impressed!

Yes, indeed, well done AnumJonathan Bryant wrote:First of all, congratulations to the winner.
Agreed, well done to the ECF, whoever is responsible (I think there is an obvious lesson to be learned about keeping SR away from anything to do with the ECF)Jonathan Bryant wrote:Also congratulations to the ECF. After the embarrassing shambles last year - and despite spirited insistence at the time that there was no problem whatsoever - it’s entirely appropriate that the system things changed this year and the nominations list was much more diverse. My guess is that Mike T consulted on this matter

Hopefully we will see her go on to become a top player, she is certainly off to a good start

Re: Player of the Year
While very happy to give credit to the ECF for broadening the nominations process and achieving a welcome outcome, I tend to agree that it would be good to have some judging criteria. But that leads to the thought that maybe it would be possible to have more than one award.
At risk of making the ECF a bit Hollywood-ish, you might have, for example:
- player of the year
- performance of the year
- junior player of the year
- best organised tournament...
Then in the spirit of the razzies, perhaps:
- forumite of the year
- best performance by an arbiter in a leading role
- worst venue of the year.
