Ian Thompson wrote: The list of nominees suggests to me that's its been a pretty bleak year for English chess when several players' "outstanding result" is tying for a minor place in an open tournament, and one of the nominees has had no outstanding results at all.

Well I suppose that poses that same questions that were kicked around last year
(a) what constitutes a good reason for being 'player of the year'
and
(b) what constitutes a par performance for British chess. Is this a 'bleak' year or just worst than the out-lying high-point of the late 80s/early 90s.

Like Chris, btw, I also think it’s a bit of a shame that you can only vote for once unlike previous systems. I don’t think it’s as problematic as the system of approved nominees though.

Like Mike, perhaps, given Stewart "Diversity" Reuben’s spirited refusal to accept there was any problem at all last year ...

The view has been expressed that most of the nominated players are white. The committee did not notice this. I think that demonstrates we are not biased.

... I’m not minded to assume they he is responsible for the improvement this year.

That has to be one of the great quotes of our time.

In physical sport, such awards go to those of the elite or joining the elite who have had stand out performances over the year.

Often. But sometimes, in football clubs for instance, the supporters' player of the year will be a journeyman who's considered to have put it a particular degree of effort or to have a particular rapport with the fans or whatever.

It is a nice e-mail. Shame Chris Kreuzer not on but may well be his recent result not in the time period.

Will have to think about my one vote (even on the last vote for mayor of London we got two).

My only thought on rest of the e-mail was why use encomium instead of eulogy?

Well, to be fair "eulogy" does (not always, but very often) refer to people who have died......

Thanks Mike, we are the English Chess Federation & English was not my favourite subject.

Perhaps we all ought to have got views to the ECF earlier on type of awards too, as does not reflect a lot of the good work in chess that goes on.

Some comparisons will the past are fine but as another big sporting event is about to start are England likely to win an event after 50 years?

I was not quite old enough to remember the last one but very intrigued by the 'television' which came into our house.

Can we at least try to keep this serious?

Yes I will. I'm sleeping on my POTY decision.

I will think about my encomium too. Plenty of locals with 50 years so will want to get that right.

Congratulations indeed - for that outstanding result in a u-9 event last year.

Er, were there other achievements though? One assumes so. But the link is rather coy on the matter.
