Ahem, no. The band in question were quite a bit better than them (in my opinion). Clue: they became famous in the 90s for the wrong reason, courtesy of the most popular band of the early 90s copying one of their hits. Extra clue, the bass line from that song was lifted from 'Life goes on' by The Damned, England's best punk band, and one of the best bands England has produced ever :)

If you can find the missing link between The Damned ------and ----- Nirvana then you know who wrote a song about chess once.

And the answer is Killing Joke and their song Chessboards (not one I've ever heard or even heard of before):

Jonathan Levitt became an IM in 1984 and a GM in 1990. Not sure why he is 1994 on your list, John.

(And Penrose was 1993.)

I recall researching the dates for JL and finding different ones depending on where I looked. Thanks for the correction assuming we believe FIDE!

I think there was something a little unusual about JonLevitt's title. I believe the BCF International Rating Officer, George Simth, did some research and showed that FIDE rating calculations should have indicated that he crossed the 2500 title thus could claim the tite. Either that , or he revsited a Norm calculation and showed it was valid.

Sincere apologies for slipping in a rather cryptic question but which noted chess historian had the following briefly inter-related in his life: the great depression, holy river & hound of the plain, a black horse, and a preference to shop at Sainsburys.
