Remembering Brian Reilly (12-xii-1901 29-xii-1991)

One of the giants of chess publishing. Editor of BCM from 1949 until 1981.

Somewhat in the shadow of BH Wood but undeservedly so (IMHO).

Irish Olympiad team player of IM strength

FIDE Delegate of note.

We have sourced a number of previously unpublished photographs of his chess career from the 1920s to the 1980s.

I wonder if you can help by tracking down the score of the game

Reilly vs Vladas Ivanonich Mikenas played in round 19 (August 31st) of the 1935 Olympiad in Warsaw. Reilly won the game with white.

BPR had already beaten Reuben Fine, Grob, Book, and beating Mikenas was a great scalp for Brian.

The game score is missing from Olimpbase and MegaBase 2020. Being the final round probably did not help.

Thanks!

The Reilly v Mikenas game can be found on page 327 of A.J. Gillam's recently published book on the Warsaw Olympiad.

Delighted to be able to help. While working my way through the Reilly profile and on looking at the photograph of the players at Nice 1931, I couldn't believe the identification of O'Hanlon in the caption could be correct. On checking your source (BCM 1931) "O'Hanlon" is identified as Tournament Director Telling.

I am grateful to Tony Gillam who has supplied the Reilly - Mikenas game score now included in the article.

It is included in his new book Warsaw Olympiad 1935, The Chess Player, Nottingham, 2020. which is available from Tony Peterson (https://chessbooks.co.uk/)

The silly O'Hanlon / Telling transcription has been amended : thanks David!
