John, whilst having absolutely no idea what the Elephant Gambit is, nor any idea of the significance of anything my father wrote in his YEP column, I am just glad that it is being shared here and subsequently to be shared on Britbase. It means a lot to my family and it would have meant a lot to my parents to think that all these decades later, my Dad's musings on his beloved world of chess would have been of interest to such esteemed people in the chess community. So thank you for sparing the time to trawl through all this material.

Many thanks, Gerard. I'm in the process of adding the games to BritBase at the moment. Can I point out that there is a colour error in one of the games: Edith Holloway was Black (and won) against Sydney Meymott...

I've just posted a page recording the 1964/65 Hastings Congress...

Comparing it with this year's Hastings, I noticed that there is at least one player, Nigel Dennis, who played in 1964/65 who is taking part in 2023/4. He won his section with a clean score in 1964/65, aged 20, and is the highest rated player in his section in 2023/4. Nigel is one of those players who always looks the same from the first time you saw him, which in my case would have been the 1968 Berks & Bucks (Marlow) Congress. I shall be rooting for him.
If anyone has any more games from the 1964/65 Congress, I shall of course be glad to add them to the collection. My thanks to Brian Denman for sharing his own stash of 1964/65 games.

In Nigel's group, you have an AJ Thurgood/Thurford of Chobham. I suspect that might well be AJ Thurgood of Redhill chess club - he was a member when I joined in 1967 and a few years later presented a trophy for "Meritorious Performance", which was not necessarily the best score in the league.
He also participated in a memorable event, when he was rocking back and forth in his chair, and overdid it, landing with an enormous crash on the floor. Virtually everyone jumped in the air and rushed to help him. The only undisturbed player was Major Low, by then in his 80s. He sat there quietly, and murmured, "Reminds me of the Blitz!"

Thanks, Kevin. I'm sure you're right about Thurgood/Thurford. (The latter was an unlikely version of a name which I found in a newspaper - probably a misprint.)
