Worcester & District Chess League

Post by raycollett » Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:28 pm

On 23 August 2022 Worcester & District League club representatives decided to merge with Worcestershire Chess Association. This brings to an end the independent existence of the District League, but its competitions live on. The District league, and the individual tournaments for the Bennett (open) and Ball (u1650) cups continue.

Members took the decision because for many years there has been significant overlap of officers of the district league and the county association and the costs of banking and insurance made it increasingly unviable to run two organisations.

It is understood that the District League was founded in 1932 and for many years the noted Blind player Reg Bonham was its President. Archive results of the District League 2001-2019 are maintained at: http://www.raycollett.net/wd/

I shall be very grateful if any forumites have results of annual matches which were played until at least 1987 between Worc & Dist League and Coventry and Dist Leagues when Eric Siegel was secretary of Worcester District.
