Crabbed age

Post by Jon D'Souza-Eva » Sun Oct 29, 2023 2:41 pm

At the 31st World Seniors, the women's tournament is for those aged 50+. The top seed, Nona Gaprindashvili, is 82 years old! Has there ever been another tournament where the top seed is quite so old? A related question - what is the age of the oldest ever tournament winner?

Well, Korchnoi won the Swiss national championship and the Botvinnik Memorial (Seniors) at Suzdal when he was 80, but I can't remember if he had any more tournament wins after those.

It's a quote from Shakespeare: "Crabbed age and youth cannot live together".
