Was Scarborough ever one of the main venues for chess in England? I note that the British Championships has been held there more than once.

I would say it still is. The weekend tournament at the end of October in the Spa Pavilion is one of the largest in the UK and that same building has been repeatedly used as a British Championship venue.

okay thanks. For us southerners, its hard to know where the main playing venues are up north.
