Only one I know!
Yes, there was a tie in Ayr. Maybe three players were involved. The late Tom Clarke from belfast was
one of them anyway and they had a playoff later in England, which Hall won.

Hello this is Mark Walker not Matthew Walker,

I justified my place in the simultaneous with Kasparov on bottom board - I drew with him - you omitted to say that Leonard but hey I wasn't a London Junior so something like that you wouldn't have noticed!! Has an eleven year old ever got a result with a world champion in simultaneous before?

As for Leonard confusing me with Matthew Sadler are you joking we were like chalk and cheese.... Hey never let the truth get in the way of a good dit!

Shock horror were some of our great players today ever not as good as some that stopped playing..... Leading up to the simultaneous I played in Paris with Matthew and I finsihed ahead of him. I then lost to him in U11 British Championship (I still remember the aweful mistake I made in the opening) but I was definietly seeded above him there too. The last time we met I think we drew in Hampshire vs. Middlesex junior game - I was 14ish.

Great to hear from all the old names, hope you are all healthy and enjoying life. Hopefully, I will make a British Championship - hoping for a section for players who haven't played in +ten years!

All the best.

JE Reddon played in the Richmond All Night Tournament in about 1983, won by Hodgson I think.

Pleasant to hear from Mark Walker hereabouts. For John Saunders records he is M.I.Walker, cousin of O.R. Worsfold who won the U-15s at Blackpool 1988.

Hi Mark - it is Sarah (Christopher) here, glad to hear all is well with you - how is your brother?

John - don't know if it helps or is too late now but my married name is de Lisle for the record (I was U18 Girls Champ in 1985).

Apologies for bumping this thread but I spotted an error in the ECF website's list of champions.

http://www.englishchess.org.uk/british- ... t/#seventy

The 1970 (Coventry) British Under-21 Champion was Derek M Wise (not David Wise).

I had this name right on my own champions' list at the BritBase site, but I will own up to there being a number of other mix-ups there as regards Derek M Wise and David Wise. I hope these are now correct on BritBase - please let me know if you find any errors - but there are still many such mistakes over the two Wises on commercial and online databases and elsewhere. Here's a guide for those wishing to make the correction on their own databases (I consulted David Wise himself and I'm pretty sure of my facts now). Derek Maurice* Wise (1949-2010) played all the extant database games from the 1960s and 1970s, which includes the 1971, 1973, 1974 and 1976 British Championships. Derek was originally from Bristol, moved to Norfolk, and later lived in the NE, which may have led to still more of a confusion with David Wise, who has always been based in the Middlesbrough area. David Wise (born 1956 - he has no middle name) played all subsequent games commonly found on databases from the 1980s onwards. David tells me he has seen some of his games given with the name David A Wise but those should be amended to David Wise.

* edited to add the middle name

I noticed 3 people called Patzer on the Fide rating list. Not champion names.

I've since been told by email that Derek Wise's middle name was Maurice.

He was awarded the CBE in 2008. I found an obit online here.

But was that really the same Jeffrey A Lawrence playing in the US Open in 2001?

Edit: It would appear not. It seems that the Jeffrey A Lawrence who plays in America was born in 1960:
http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=2006448
I'm pretty sure his name was/is John. I see that BigBase also calls him Jeffrey, but then they also have many games played by the likes of Leonhard William Barden and Conel Hughes Alexander.
Richard

I think you are right. I've just done an instant amendment of the BritBase list. I also concur with your comment on Mega/Big Base name accuracy. Not a reliable source for forenames...
John Lawrence was a strong club player in the Birmingham League when I was a kid. He played, iirc, for Kynoch CC. The dates seem to fit. So my bet is that this u-15 champion is him. Indeed, I've now checked the Kynoch CC website and it records J A Lawrence as Birmingham League Div 3 Individual Champion for 1955-56; and Div 1 Individual Champion for 1967-68. Thereafter, silence though. He may have left the city, or the club. Or the game.

Before anyone gets carried away trying to figure out the forenames of the people in Gordon's post, I've some good news - the job of discovering all the names was completed not long after this thread was started back in 2010. My list of all the British champions can be found here - http://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/britchamps.html - and I'm pretty sure that all the forenames are in place*. As you can see if you consult my website, I've now embarked on a more ambitious task - to post complete results and crosstables (as well as available games) of all the British Championships from 1904 onwards. There is still some way to go but there is already a lot of useful reference info there for people who like that sort of thing.

* An exception being 'Miss Fatima'! No luck there yet...
