More on Zollner... In his 1890 bicycle vs boat race, he won a 100 guinea bet, which was rather a lot in those days. Died Jan 1945 aged 91 according to Chess. He knew Steinitz and drew with Capablanca and beat Alekhine in Simuls.

While I gather this is mostly about players from long ago, I'll mention that US Champion Stuart Rachels played a few times for Oxfordshire (as I recall he couldn't make the Minor Counties' Final, which we lost by a narrow margin) and Jesse Kraai was a teammate of mine at Cowley chess club.

Both were pursuing postgraduate degrees at Oxford University. As was, for instance, Ken Regan a few years earlier. I imagine that lots of strong players from overseas must have similarly studied in the UK at one time or another.
