From memory there was a board 1 prize for the top performing board1? Does anyone have the details of the winners?

Regarding locations it was held in Cardiff in about 1986 (but can't remember the exact year - could be a year either side of that)

I have a bookmark to the Oxford report from the Birmingham University organised event that might help with the Oxford team.

http://classic-web.archive.org/web/1999 ... eruni.html

1. Maxim Devereaux
2. Joel Ouaknine
3. The Report Writer?
4. Alex Lewis
5. Shashi Jayakumar

No prizes for spotting the line as to why I have the report bookmarked.
Over the weekend I will hunt to see if I have any hard copies of reports from my university days to see if I can fill in board 3.

That rings a bell. In Swansea 1991, that would have been/was shared between Michael Hennigan (Bristol) and Graeme Buckley (Bath) both on 5.5/6 - though Hennigan was more deserving because unlike Graeme he played (and beat) Chris Ward (Leicester).

I played in the BUCA twice: 1967 (at the University of York campus) and 1972 (somewhere in West London).
In the 1967 event, I recall Oxford had three teams and it amused Andrew Whiteley to have a member of his own college
(Pembroke) on top board for each. So Andrew himself played for the first team, I was on top board for the second team
and Liam Porter (I hope I have the name right) was top board for Oxford III.

In round one, I have a vague recollection, the first and third teams had to play and Porter put
up a great struggle against Whiteley though eventually losing.
I had the first of many memorable encounters with Michael Basman during this event, but he eventually won in a time scramble.

In 1972 I played board 1 for Birmingham, but don't remember much about it.

I'm pretty sure 1972 was at Imperial College. In 1973 it was held in Leeds.

Cosulting my old games books I have the following leading scores:
1972: 1 Camb1 11.5, 2 Soton 10.5, 3 Oxford 1 9.5
1973: 1 Cambs 24/30, 2. Leeds 21, 3 London 17.5

AC Cooper played on board 5 for Cambs - I got to play him twice(+1=0-1)!

I've now got 1964-1971 (save for 1967), and a pretty good coverage of everything since 1991 (save for 2001). Thanks!

Colin, many thanks for all this. The more information you can provide from these CHESSes, the better! Does CHESS mention first names for the London team this year?

K D Sales must have been Keith Sales (British U18 Champion in 1954)

None of the other names ring any bells. (Sales was an Essex top board player 200+ in the late sixties/early seventies)

D J P Gray is Professor Sir Denis Gray, O.B.E.! (John Saunders mentioned him in a thread about chess players in the New Years honours list).
