I came across a bound copy of Chess for 1970-1971 in a 2nd hand bookshop last weekend. It cost £6, so I bought it. Leading stories/ controversies of the year include:

1. I was late turning up for one round of a tournament when I had black. I discovered that my clock was running but white had made no move. What should I do?

2. 24 chess clocks belonging to the BCF went missing in mysterious/ unexplained circumstances.

3. Should Chess magazine introduce algebraic notation? 30 leading players had signed a letter supporting this but the correspondence columns were full of complaints about algebraic being ugly, difficult to comprehend and several threats of cancelled subscriptions should algebraic notation be adopted.

All leading experts predicted that the Fischer-Larsen match would be very tight and Fischer was unlikely to beat Petrosian because he was "almost unbeatable" at matchplay.
