Middlesex County Chess Association

Post by Adam Raoof » Mon Jul 25, 2011 11:58 am

I hope that you can help me out here. I have created a new website for the MCCA and I would like to add a Roll of Honour - we don't seem to have a record of who won what! If there is a historian out there who has / would like to assist me in compiling / the definitive list, it would be a great help.

http://www.middlesexchess.org.uk/

Middlesex League Division 1

2011 - Ealing I
2010 - Hendon I

etc

Middlesex League Division 2

2011 - Athenaeum I

Middlesex League Division 3

2011 - Albany I
etc

plus a load of events that haven't taken place every year;

Winter's Trophy
Ralph Barnet
Correspondence Championships
Individual Championships

and others such as Junior titles - I think the London Junior Chess Championship includes the Middlesex County Junior and Girls' titles at the University of Westminster Harrow? I don't have a list of previous winners.

I think Wood Green won in 1980/81.

There is a comment in a 1981 edition of Chess that King's Head had defeated Wood Green, the current London League and Middlesex League Champions (this match taking place in September 1981).
See http://tinyurl.com/3v4e8mj

Wood Green were the London League Champions in 1980/81 (see http://www.londonchess.plus.com/champs.htm), but not for a couple of years before or after that, so 1980/81 is the only season when they could have been described as current London League and Middlesex League Champions.

Thanks Jon!

Now I have to find the winners of some of the other trophies... such as the Winters Trophy - which I even remember taking part in one year...

Follow up - does anyone have a brief history of the Winters Trophy and the Ralph Barnett Trophy that I could add to the MCCA website?

Nothing to do with this, but your Wikipedia map of Middlesex County isn't old enough!

The boundaries of Middlesex have varied over time, so it depends what you want to show with such a map.

You are talking about the page here?

http://middlesexchess.blogspot.co.uk/p/middlesex.html

That image is from here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Middlesex.svg

"Numbered map of the divisions of Middlesex in 1961"

Was trying to find out when the MCCA formed, but it doesn't appear to be anywhere on the MCCA blog...

This is a map from 1824:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gray1 ... dlesex.jpg

This one shows the difference between 1851 and 1911:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Middl ... d_1911.png

The 1911 one looks very like the 1961 one.

Was the MCCA formed in 1908? There are references in that year to it being "newly formed".

PS. Some more history at these links:

http://www.sccu.ndo.co.uk/9900/let.htm

Paul McKeown said there in 2000:

"As captain of the Middlesex Open Team, I recently took possession of the Middlesex County Chess Association Match Books, a set of three very beautiful leather bound journals detailing all the matches that Middlesex have played (at all levels, open, 2nd, 3rd, 4th teams, friendly matches, correspondence matches, etc.) since they began competing in 1908. Included are such information as players club allegiances, gradings, newspaper cuttings, photographs, even the bill of fare for a Middlesex team dinner at Simpsons in the Strand!"

An archive listing here:

http://www.archivesforlondon.org/downlo ... ssue13.pdf

"Middlesex County Chess Association: papers incl minutes and corresp 1907-2002 (B08/145)"

Fuller description of those archives here:

http://217.154.230.218/NR/rdonlyres/14E ... ssions.pdf

B08/145: MIDDLESEX COUNTY CHESS ASSOCIATION: Minutes 1907 - 2001, correspondence and papers 1964-2002, minutes of Middlesex Chess League 1981-1999 1907-2002

So it looks like the MCCA formed in 1907, or at least minutes exist dating back that far?

No, but unless you want to weaken the team somewhat, you probably need one that includes Hackney

See http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3209 for an earlier thread dealing with the geographical issue.
