Smyslov-Botvinnik USSR Championship 1955

Post by JustinHorton » Sat Jul 06, 2013 9:06 pm

This game.

I've come across some annotations in a couple of places (e.g. here) which include the odd-sounding phrase
"Botvinnik prepares a vigorous counterattack in the f-file."
Obviously we would say "along" rather than "in". Does anybody have any idea where this annotation originates?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

According to the above URL the annotation is provided by "Annotated by: sahadeo (1404) "

It goes back to the 1920s if not further: the phrase occurs here and there in Nimzowitsch's My System, as does "in the seventh rank" at least once.

I don't know what preposition was used in the original German, but it does seem odd that Nimzo's translator, Philip Hereford, should have opted for this usage in the English version.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

This I know. I rather suspect however that the good Sahadeo is not the original annotator.
