British Championships Tunbridge Wells 1908

Post by Gerard Killoran » Sun Sep 06, 2015 12:31 pm

This is the only game I have found from the other/minor events in 1908. Surely others must have been published?

I have found one more game in a BCF Yearbook:

If John is reading this, I would like to thank him for downloading into BritBase all the games from the recent ECF Congress, as I am completely baffled by the new ECF way of providing games using Chess-results.com. In fact I did not manage to download a single game! If one tries to download a specific file, a PartiesSuche file (whatever that is) is created, which goes into my Pictures section, but will not download into the ChessBase directory. I also wanted to download some junior games from the 2013 congress at Torquay, but BCF's new database seems to have prevented that as well. I also had a problem with the results and pairings sections. We used to have a round by round summary with a final table, but now the database only seems to provide a table of entrants. Any help would be welcome, as an email that I sent to the ECF has not even been acknowledged.

Going to (as an example)
http://www.chess-results.com/tnr182168.aspx?lan=1

It's the second week afternoon open. Under games, it states there are 99 games for download.

If you click on that, you are taken to
http://www.chess-results.com/PartieSuch ... 2168&art=3

You enter 1 and 5 in "Round from" and "Found to" and then the button "Download as pgn file".

Depending on how you have your computer configured for downloads, it will then set up a file (in this example) 182168_1_5.pgn. How you handle it from there is a question of how you have your computer configured. The number 182168 is the dbkey from the previous screen, so you can always find out the file name. The old fashioned method of file opening should always work. Start up chessbase and then retrieve by File Open, the required file from wherever your system defaults have hidden it. Left to its own devices, downloaded stuff always goes to a folder with downloads in its name.

Many thanks for this, Roger. You seem to be very good with IT. There appears to be a problem with downloading games from the 2013 BCF Congress at Torquay. The British Championship games can be accessed through BritBase, but the other tournaments, which used to be on the ECF website, seem to have disappeared altogether. It is stated there that the archive for 2013 is pending, though I do not know exactly what that means. If one clicks on the link for this, one is referred back to the 2015 results.

The ECF are moving from one server to another in order to improve performance and the copy of the 2013 website appears to be in transition.

There's an ongoing world project (nothing to do with the ECF) which archives webpages considered important and the 2013 Congress was amongst them.

This link brings up the archive of the games page for 2013

Many thanks to Gerard and Brian for the two games which I have added to Britbase, along with a substantial number of games from the 1909 congress which Gerard sent me separately (today's Britbase update activity can be accessed via the What's New page).

I'm not sure why there were so few games from the subsidiary sections in 1908 around the provincial newspapers. Could it because chess columnists had such a large number of championship games to pick from in 1908 (since BCM published all the games) that they didn't need to pad out their columns with other material?

Thanks also to Roger for helping Brian to overcome the obstacle course of the 2014 championship downloads page. I had managed that one unaided, but your help in locating the 2013 page is much appreciated.

Many thanks to Roger for providing me with a link for the 2013 BCF Congress at Torquay. I am sorry if I have caused any inconvenience by diverging from the previous history section. I notice that John has mentioned the 1909 Scarborough Congress and indeed BritBase has a good proportion of the British Championship games. I enclose the scores of a couple of the other events - I hope that you do not mind me quoting them here under the 1908 section:

Many thanks for those extra games, Brian, which I have added to Britbase.

I've also processed all the 2013 British Championship subsidiary event games and tidied up the names of players and events. (It was quite a task - 1,715 games in total.) I've uploaded it to one whopping file on Britbase. There appears to be one round missing (Rd 5) from the Five-Day Week 2 A.M. tournament as a result of an erroneous link which connects to a duplicate file of the round 3 games. Probably too late to do anything about it now - but if anyone happens to have those games, could you steer them in my direction.

Many thanks for this, John - it will probably save me quite a bit of time. Your work rate is amazing!
